We are excited to announce a new Consultant role in Special Care Dentistry within our newly established multidisciplinary Community Dental Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape and contribute to the development of a growing service.

The post offers the chance to provide high-quality Special Care Dentistry for vulnerable adults, including the delivery of conscious sedation and general anaesthesia, across the Hywel Dda University Health Board (HDUHB) area. As part of this new team, the successful candidate may also be asked to lead and support service development, ensuring the provision of comprehensive oral care for vulnerable people across the three counties of the Health Board.

Main duties of the job

To provide and co-ordinate comprehensive services for vulnerable adults requiring Special Care Dentistry. This includes all aspects of clinical leadership, treatment and relevant management duties in order to provide this role.

  • To lead and co-ordinate appropriate CDS directorate research interests which will inform the delivery of Special Care Dentistry in accordance with the HDUHB Research and Development framework.
  • To develop integrated oral care pathways by liaising with other healthcare providers and external agencies for vulnerable adult groups.
  • To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the HDUHB Oral Health plans and the Health Board Plan
  • To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the Community Dental Services
  • To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the Community Dental Service is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process of colleagues.
  • Represent HDUHB on regional and national groups related to Special Care Dentistry as appropriate, for example, Managed Clinical Networks.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GDC Registration
  • On the GDC Specialist Register
  • Membership in Special Care Dentistry or equivalent
  • Valid Certified Intermediate Life Support Skills (or equivalent international qualification)
Desirable criteria
  • Other postgraduate qualification in Special Care (e.g. MSc, Professional Doctorate)
  • One or more of the following qualifications: MSc, FDS RCS, MFDS RCS, MSCD RCS (Ed), DSCD RCS (Eng)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad based experience in Special Care Dentistry including experience of working within Community Dental Services
  • Successful completion of SAC- approved 3-year minimum training programme in Special Care Dentistry with CCT
  • Or: on the GDC Specialist Register in Special Care Dentistry
  • Competence in sedation, general anaesthesia and management of individuals and groups of vulnerable people requiring Special Care Dentistry
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in the NHS

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in quality improvement programmes and their role in improving dental practice
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of training in quality improvement

Research

Essential criteria
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence
  • Publication/posters of relevant review articles or case reports
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication
  • Research degree

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching undergraduates and postgraduates
Desirable criteria
  • Organisation of further teaching programmes in dental education
  • Further training or qualifications in education

Management

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of Special Care Dentistry within the Community Dental Services
